Excessive Heat Likely for Southeast to End May

Figure 1. 8 – 14 day temperature outlook from the Climate Prediction Center.

A very strong upper-level ridge is going to build across the Southeast by the 23rd/24th and remain in place through the end of the month.

This will result in well-above-average temperatures for much of the eastern third of the country, including Mississippi, Alabama and Florida (see figure 1).

Looking at the latest ensemble guidance, many places, such as Birmingham, AL, Jackson, MS and Tallahassee, Fl are likely to experience highs in the 90s.

However, there is a silver lining if you don’t like the heat: excluding Texas and Louisiana, generally dry conditions can also be expected, which is good for any celebrations planned for Memorial Day weekend.

This would be a stark contrast to last year, when Tropical Storm Alberto made landfall near Panama City, FL on May 28th (Memorial Day 2018).
