Extreme Heat This Weekend; Heat Indices of 105 – 110° Expected

Figure 1. NAM projected heat index values at 3:00 PM CDT Sunday.

Extreme heat is going to grip much of the Gulf Coast Region this weekend, with the hottest weekend of the year expected for the Mobile/Pensacola area. Heat advisories and excessive heat warnings are already in effect.

Daytime high temperatures will range from the mid 90s to lower/mid 100s tomorrow and Sunday. Heat indices will run roughly 5 – 15° F warmer than the actual air temperature due to dew points in the 70 – 80° F range. Generally, maximum heat index values between 105 and 110° F are expected.

By early/mid week next week, the ridge causing all of this anomalously warm heat should break down, causing departures to drop back to more normal levels.
