Widespread Snow Ongoing This Morning

A  winter weather event is now ongoing across Southeast Louisiana, South and Central Mississippi, and parts of South and Central Alabama, as a mix of rain and snow, and in some cases rain, sleet, and snow (along the east side of the main band of snow), to just snow is falling.

Snowfall accumulations of 2 – 3″ have been reported around Jackson, MS with similar accumulations in other areas of South Mississippi, as well as Choctaw, Alabama.

Advisories: Both the Winter Storm Warning and Winter Weather Advisory went into effect overnight.

WINTER STORM WARNING: The Winter Storm Warning was expanded into Central Alabama overnight, as well as a greater portion of South Mississippi. It expires at midnight CST tonight, 6:00 PM CST tonight across Southwest Alabama and Southeast Mississippi, and at noon CST this afternoon across the remainder of South Mississippi.

WINTER WEATHER ADVISORY: The Winter Weather Advisory expires at midnight CST tonight, and noon CST across Southeast Louisiana and Southwest Mississippi.

Timing: This wintry mix and snow will continue though later this morning and early this afternoon, being heavy at times in some locations, eventually coming to an end from west to east late this afternoon and early this evening.

Accumulations: Overall, by the end of the event this afternoon, snowfall accumulations between 2 – 3″ are still anticipated in the Winter Storm Warned zone, with some locally higher amounts of up to 2 – 5″ now possible.

Meanwhile, accumulations between 1/4″ to 1″ are still expected for locations under the Winter Weather Advisory.

Impacts: No significant impacts are expected. However, there is a chance that snowfall rates could be fast enough to negate the warmer surface temperatures, or surface temperatures could get colder quicker than anticipated; this would cause wet, slushy snow to accumulate on roadways leading to travel issues.

Also, roads could become rather slick throughout the morning and again this afternoon and evening.  The same goes for tonight into tomorrow morning on roads that remain wet, as temperatures will drop below freezing.

A few key notes:

  • Not everyone under the Winter Weather Advisory will see accumulating snow, but should see at least a dusting.
  • The heaviest accumulations will occur in the Winter Storm Warned areas.
  • Overall, significant impacts are not expected. Though, some impacts to travel could be possible.
